Immerse yourself in the British Isles with overnight stays in Bergen, Norway, and Greenwich, England. Discover the legendary Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland and its capital, Edinburgh. Visit the Shetland and Orkney Islands, and contrast modern Belfast with traditional Dublin. In England, visit maritime Liverpool, see historic Dover and enjoy a tour of London. We enjoyed the Ffestiniog railway in Wales, especially the scenery to and from the train and lunch in a lovely town.
Pre: London
Ancient Castle & Abbey Tavern in Dublin was much less satisfying; Malahide Castle was worthwhile, but the time in Howth was entirely devoted to a pub and the guide and driver were not ready for prime time. London and the London Eye was well-planned, but torrential rain put a wet blanket on it [I like my puns intended ]. This 15-day cruise from San Juan to Barcelona crosses oceans and bridges cultures on an enriching trans-Atlantic voyage, pausing to explore the lush Madeira island en route. This 29-day voyage from Stockholm to London (or the reverse) traces the shores of 11 countries, exploring Norway’s fjords, the Scottish Highlands and the heart of vibrant cities such as Berlin and Bergen. In Invergordon, I booked through Trip Advisor, Avril's Tours (Amy) Dunrobin, Dornach, & Distillery. She was very knowledgeable about the area and made our day interesting. John was professional and knowledgeable, giving us information that was interesting, never boring. John took us on beautiful country roads away from the crowds to hidden gem with amazing scenery.
Day 3: Dover, England
This 23-day cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver (or the reverse) offers the opportunity to experience three divergent cultures with visits to Japan, Russia, the United States and Canada, and overnights in Yokohama, Sapporo and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This 15-day cruise from Sydney to Auckland (or the reverse) sails the southern seas to charming ports offering a unique blend of European and Māori culture, as well as fascinating wildlife and picturesque settings. Invergordon lies in the mountainous, heather-covered Scottish Highlands amid a patchwork of farmland. The small community celebrates itself with a series of stunning murals painted by local artists; a walking trail leads visitors to them all, passing colorful window flowerboxes along the way. Whisky is another mainstay here, produced in a local grain distillery.
Explore the history and beauty of the Westfjords, visit small villages and see wildlife. Bergen is home to the Hanseatic League's only kontor (trading enclave) still in existence. Bryggen wharf, a row of timbered Hanseatic warehouses along a quaint quay, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow wooden walkways are flanked by parallel rows of small, vibrantly painted buildings overlooking the picturesque Vågen Harbor. This is perhaps the most charming district of Bergen and a delight to explore, from its tight-knit community of workshops where artisans sell their wares to its cafés where freshly prepared smørbrød, or open-faced sandwiches, are on the menu. Holyhead is a cozy coastal enclave on the isle of Anglesey off the northwestern tip of Wales.

It was even a repeat as we did it back in 2018 but felt "brand new" as we mixed things up with our excursions and did a lot on our own (no tour, Viking or otherwise). Explore "Inversnecky," as Scotland’s northernmost city on the banks of the Ness River is known locally. I’ve been to London at least five times for work but only once for pure play, So I will definitely appreciate this there. As an ex-Brit, I have taken my US wife many times to London as it serves as a starting and focal point of various road-trips in England and Wales that we have taken. Sail the North Sea, central to Europe’s history, from Viking voyages to oil drilling.

Edinburgh Castle, home of the Scottish Crown Jewels and countless medieval treasures, overlooks the city from Castle Rock. The Royal Mile unfurls Edinburgh's architectural gems in all their finery, from the Canongate to St. Giles's Cathedral to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish residence of British royalty. Later, the earls took over, and the French Renaissance palace that remains is a legacy to their grandeur. Another castle, Balfour, stands regally in a stark landscape. While the northern Europeans greatly influenced this hauntingly beautiful archipelago, consider the Italian Chapel, built by the hands of Italian prisoners during wartime. The history of the Scottish Orkney Islands dates back millennia.
This 13-day voyage from Bergen to Reykjavik (or the reverse) unlocks the mysteries of the far noth and reveals nature at its most magnificent as you cruise from breathtaking Norway, across the North and Norwegian Seas, to stunning Iceland. This 15-day cruise from Venice to Istanbul (or the reverse) delivers you to some of the most intriguing coastal cities of the Adriatic and Aegean, showcasing well-preserved Old Towns, remnants of ancient civilizations, picturesque squares and more. Enjoy charming Bergen, a historic city full of colorful architecture and a lively atmosphere. Our cruise is also London to Bergen, but the excursions are not all the same. I also included (in the far right column) the 2022 prices when available. On average, prices increased about $20 per excursion (usually between $10 to $30) in 2023 compared to 2022.

Visit the charming old town, home to the City Hall, Jens Bang’s House and Ålborghus Castle. Discover the sophisticated culture and history of one of Scotland’s earliest civilizations, the Picts. This 13-day voyage from London to Bergen (or the reverse) sails far north into the Arctic Circle, providing a glimpse into the stunning natural beauty, fascinating history and enduring culture of seven intriguing ports along the way. Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure. Great information and very timely as I am spending hours researching our BI cruise in April 2023! Would love to hear about every port, what you did, and if you would recommend from personal experience any of the included tours. Finally, don't feel that you must take only the Viking included shore excursions (because you've already paid for them in your fare). Sharing a private guide with a couple of other couples from your Roll Call will usually allow you to combine the sights from two different ship tours and still keep the cost reasonable.

I do highly recommend getting a tube pass and also using the Thames boat day pass to get around.
I hope this helps others when they are working on excursions. Take in the natural beauty of UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord from atop Eagle’s Bend viewpoint. Edinburgh has been Scotland's capital since the 15th century, despite the fact that the Union of the Crowns moved it to London in 1603. There is no capital quite like Edinburgh, with its gorgeous setting on green rocky hillocks and splendid views of the sea.

This 16-day journey from Mumbai to Bangkok introduces the rich history and culture of five fascinating countries—India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand—including overnight stays in Mumbai, Colombo and Bangkok.
More recent history echoes through the streets of Lerwick, the islands' sleepy capital founded by Dutch fishermen. The main island, Mainland, gets much of its beauty from its diversity. Farmlands and dreamy meadows unfold toward seal-dotted beaches, rocky cliffs take a beating from the surf, and medieval castles overlook valleys and lakes. A major port heralded for its shipbuilding heritage, Belfast has undergone a cultural and architectural renaissance unrivaled in the rest of Europe. The influence of Britain is everywhere in this polished capital of Northern Ireland. Some of its most striking buildings exude Victorian flair and cosmopolitan elegance amid its famous Irish charm.
